Meet Michael, who has reached a 12 year milestone volunteering at BCDH
Michael has just celebrated 12 years' volunteering with BCDH! He is autistic and joins us with his support person once a fortnight. We enjoy the positive and upbeat nature that he brings, and he is a valued member of our maintenance team.
Please tell us a little bit about your life outside of BCDH.
As well as volunteering at Bath Cats & Dogs Home, I help at the Trowbridge Weavers Market and the Priory Group. I like going to the Country West Show and the Frome Show and love to head down to Weymouth in my spare time.
How long have you been volunteering at BCDH?
I started volunteering with Bath Cats & Dogs Home in July 2012! I come in every other Wednesday and still love my volunteer role as much as I did when I started 12 years ago.
What do you do here?
I put my love of gardening and DIY to use by helping the Grounds & Maintenance team. Throughout the summer you’ll find me keeping the greenery under control around the kennels and paddocks by trimming hedges, strimming and mowing the grass. In the autumn I help keep the site tidy by sweeping up the fallen leaves.
Why did you want to volunteer for BCDH?
I love animals and enjoy doing gardening and maintenance, so this was a perfect volunteer opportunity for me!
What do you most enjoy about volunteering?
I get to use all sorts of tools and machinery such as strimmers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers and hedge cutters, and really enjoy keeping the site clean and tidy for the cats and dogs. I also like to help raise money for BCDH at fundraising events.
What would you like to say to anyone considering volunteering for BCDH?
I’d love to welcome any new volunteers to the team and help to show any new maintenance volunteers how things work.
