What is sustainable shopping, and why does it matter?
Fast fashion is all about quick, cheap, and trendy clothing, but it comes with significant downsides. The rapid production of these clothes leads to large amounts of waste and environmental harm, like high water usage and pollution. Plus, fast fashion encourages a disposable mindset, where clothes are worn a few times and then tossed out, contributing to overflowing landfills.
Second-hand shopping is a great way to reduce waste and make the most of existing resources. When you buy pre-loved items, you’re helping to extend the life of an item, which reduces the need for new production. Re-use is one of the highest points on the waste hierarchy (see triangle below) and Bath Cats and Dogs Home is amongst many charity retailers who provide a sustainable option to let go of no-longer-needed clothing, books, media and homewares.
Repurposing or upcycling clothes into something new helps close the loop and build a more sustainable future.
With just a bit of creativity and care, items that need a little TLC can be transformed into something fresh and unique, making sustainability both rewarding and fun.
Recycling is another sustainable option. If we cannot sell an item, we seek to recycle it with a textile recycler ('recover' in the waste hierarchy triangle). Charity Shops can reuse or recycle more than 90% of donated clothing, over 90% of donated books and 85% of donated electricals.
Charity shops are key players in sustainable shopping. Not only do they offer affordable, unique items, but they also support good causes. For example, when you buy or donate a dress, you could be helping a dog get their paw bandaged or feed a cat for a week. Shopping at charity shops also creates a sense of community, the items donated to us are most likely kept within the local area, directly benefiting the communities we operate within. And because charity retailers can offer second hand goods at prices people can afford, consumers can make more ethical choices, whatever their budget.
Sustainable shopping is a simple but powerful way to reduce waste and make a positive impact.
By choosing second-hand and supporting our charity shops, you can find great clothes while also helping the environment and supporting worthwhile causes.
Next time you need something ‘new’, or need to clear some space at home, consider going the sustainable route - it’s a choice that benefits everyone.
